Though this year the Seahawks will unfortunately not be part of it, Super Bowl 50 is going to be one of the biggest games in history. This will most likely be legendary quarterback Peyton Manning’s last chance to shine. The Super Bowl is the largest sporting event in America, which means many parties will take place in Bellingham and beyond to watch the spectacle.

Not surprisingly, DWI tickets spike during Super Bowl days. However, if you are hosting or attending a Super Bowl party, there are things you can do to minimize your risk of getting into an accident or being responsible for causing one. The biggest risks that can result in devastating crashes are easy enough to prevent.

Tips for Hosting a Safe Super Bowl Party

If you are the one in charge of hosting this year, there are some easy things that you can do to improve safety for guests and others. These include:

  • Ask party attendees to commit to driving sober. Peer pressure doesn’t end once we leave middle school, but it can work in everyone’s favor. If your guests see that you’re looking out for them, they’ll most likely remember a statistic or news story or maybe something closer to home that reminds them why this is a good idea. According to MADD, ON AVERAGE, TWO IN THREE PEOPLE WILL BE INVOLVED IN A DRUNK DRIVING CRASH IN THEIR LIFETIME.
  • Help your friends choose not to drink and drive by providing different options for their enjoyment. This includes serving plenty of water (infusing it with lemons or cucumbers makes a delicious and  healthy drink, or you can serve Italian sodas which everyone can enjoy). Here are a few recipes to inspire you. It’s safe to say a milkshake bar or Mexican hot chocolate would be a nice alternative? Also, provide lots of food to help reduce the effects of alcohol.
  • Have taxi and ride service numbers on hand, and remember Uber is now in Bellingham so there are plenty of easy ways to get home if one is too drunk to drive.
  • Do not serve alcohol to minors. It’s illegal, and teens often lack familiarity with alcohol’s effects, which makes sense considering they’re not even supposed to drink in the first place. If someone were to get into an accident because of a drunk minor, you risk facing criminal as well as civil penalties for serving them.
