March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. At Bill Coats Law, we have seen our Bellingham friends and neighbors suffer the effects of devastating car accidents. A common injury  car accident victims suffer is TBI. Unfortunately, brain injuries are some of the hardest to treat, with some potentially terrible and long-lasting symptoms. However, because of medical knowledge and advancement, we also see a lot of recovery and relief for these victims. As a personal injury law firm, it is an honor to be able to help them through some of the challenges and turmoil the personal injury claims process can bring.

Here are a few hopeful stories about car accident victims who have endured a traumatic brain injury:

Hello, my name is Peter Lawryniuk. When I was 7 years old, I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle. I was in a coma for 11 days, and when I awoke, I needed to relearn how to walk, talk, eat, use my muscles, everything over again. It was difficult at times. The doctors thought that I might not be able to walk or talk again, not even make it past grade 9. One doctor thought positive. I am 37 years old now, and I can walk, talk, drive a car, and I work and volunteer in a daycare for the past 9 years. I also volunteer at the YMCA, and work one day a week at an open doors place for people with different disabilities. I wrote a song called miracles, and sing it on YouTube. I would like to share it here if I may, and hope that it can inspire others to never give up. Take one day at a time and think positive in life. Here is the link. Thank you.

I sustained my brain injury in a car accident in October of 2010. It took 4.5 years for the insurance company to finally acknowledge my injury and provide the required treatment. Insurance companies will do whatever it takes to ensure that they don’t have to pay for medical bills. I was forced to self educate regarding head injuries, and be my own advocate.
It’s very difficult for those who have brain injuries because our deficits and injuries are not visible. People are unaware of the daily struggle one has to function. Everyday tasks that should be simple are an obstacle.
The silver lining is to these difficulties is seeing the progress. Being able to quantify the progress helps me get through my day, and helps me reach my next goal. Every brain injury is different and everyone’s recovery goes at its own pace.
I use my art to promote brain injury awareness, and positive mental health. It’s important to encourage meditation and creativity to help the brain recover!
Hope people find their silver lining soon!”

There are approximately 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries in the United States every year, and although most are mild or moderate, thousands result in severe brain damage. Here is one horrible car accident that resulted in a severe head injury and near death for the driver. Unfortunately, this distracted driving accident probably would not have occurred if he had not been on and off the phone with his mother.

Car accidents are one of the leading causes of TBI. Please do not drive distracted or drunk, focus on the road, and call Bill Coats Law if you were the victim of someone else’s negligence. Bill Coats is Bellingham’s top personal injury lawyer to help you recover your financial strength while you regain your health.
