Throughout his two decades of experience, he has conducted over 50 trials.

Those who have been injured understand the emotional and financial impact they and their families must endure. They feel the effects of the medical bills, not being able to work, and many other treatment expenses that can come throughout the healing process. It's hard to quantify physical pain and psychological anguish, but these are inevitable effects of accidents and things that no individual or family should bear alone. The Bellingham attorneys at Bill Coats Law understand the fears and uncertainties that serious injuries bring. When victims choose Bill Coats Law, they choose advocates who are skilled and experienced in getting fast, full, fair settlements and verdicts.

The law gives accident victims the right to recover financial compensation when someone is hurt due to another's negligence. Spouses and close family members can be eligible for financial help as well. In many cases it's an insurance company who insures the responsible party is supposed to pay to even things out. However, sometimes there is a dispute about who is at fault and/or to what degree. Litigation may become necessary to show the insurance companies that injured victims won't settle for less than they deserve. This is where it is critical to have a legal advocate ready to fight for you.

In fact, insurance companies typically offer low initial settlements. It's their hope that the injured party, often desperate for money and feeling overwhelmed by the accident and recovery process will take what they can get. This strategy doesn't work when the injured victim knows what his or her case is really worth. When Bellingham lawyer Bill Coats takes on the insurance company, it sends a message that they must negotiate in good faith or risk facing a substantial judgment in court.

Skateboarding safety: part 1

Not too long ago, I was driving my car through downtown Bellingham, traveling on North Forrest. When I approached Magnolia Street, I was following a skateboarder on the road. Though he was trying to stay on the side of the lane, as the street sloped downwards, he gained momentum. His graceful weaving became more pronounced until he was completely taking over the lane. He nearly ran into the car traveling next to him when he was going so fast that he could no longer stay in the far lane. I saw three different sets of brake lights go on in a chain reaction dodging him.

Why I became a personal injury attorney

People always ask me why I love to help people who have insurance claims.  Here's why:

The experience in my life that most inspired me to become a lawyer who fights insurance companies hit close to home. It was 1991, and I was away from home in my first year of Law School. One night I got a call from my mom. Upset and afraid, she told me she’d been burglarized. I reassured her that the insurance company would help her cover all the losses from stolen items, so she wouldn’t have to worry about that.

No parent ever wants their children to experience suffering that brings lifelong consequences, but for one Bellingham family, that is exactly what happened.

Would you call a foot doctor if you broke your arm?

It's not a trick question. If you've broken a bone, you're going to want to look for a doctor who knows a lot about fixing broken bones. The same logic applies to hiring a lawyer after a serious car accident. If you or  a loved one was hurt in the collision, you probably shouldn’t call your tax attorney for help, though this person should be able to refer you to someone who can. You should hire an experienced attorney specializing in personal injury law.

How a typical personal injury claim is handled Part II

This article is continued from here and is about the Post-Lawsuit Filing phase of a typical personal injury claim.

So now things have progressed in our hypothetical case, and negotiations were not satisfying. This doesn’t mean that an accident victim must then accept whatever the offer or settlement was, even if it doesn’t feel fair. It is time to file a lawsuit.

Bellingham lawyer Bill Coats’ client Beth was only 13 years old when she was a guest at a holiday party hosted by the owners of a gravel pit near Ferndale. During the party, the teenage son of the hosts recklessly fired off a bottle rocket which struck Beth in the right eye. Beth consequently was blinded in that eye.
